Milky Oil on Your Dipstick? Don't Start the Engine
Milky or frothy oil means water has contaminated your engine oil. Here's what causes it, why it's serious, and the critical steps to take before starting your engine.
If you've pulled your dipstick and noticed the oil looks milky, creamy, or frothy instead of its normal amber or dark brown colour, you've got water contamination in your engine oil. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention, and the most important thing you can do right now is keep the engine switched off.
Water and engine oil don't mix. When they're forced together, the oil loses its ability to lubricate properly. Running an engine with contaminated oil can cause catastrophic damage to bearings, cylinder walls, and other critical internal components within minutes. Even a small amount of water can create a mayonnaise-like consistency that clogs oil passages and prevents proper circulation.
The three most common causes are a blown head gasket, which allows coolant to leak into the oil system; a cracked engine block or cylinder head, often caused by overheating or freezing; and floodwater ingestion, particularly common after heavy rain or driving through deep water. Less frequently, a damaged oil cooler or intake manifold gasket can also allow coolant or water into the oil.
What to do right now:
Do not attempt to start or run the engine, even for a short distance. If you're already at home or in a car park, leave the vehicle where it is. If you've just noticed this at a service station or on the roadside, resist the temptation to drive it somewhere safer. Moving the vehicle under its own power will cause further internal damage.
Check your coolant reservoir if it's safe to do so. A sudden drop in coolant level alongside milky oil strongly suggests a head gasket or block issue. Take a photo of the dipstick for your records and for the workshop.
The engine will need a complete oil drain and flush, and the underlying cause must be diagnosed and repaired before it can safely run again. This isn't something that can be fixed at the roadside.
